Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder and president Kamal Haasan will kick off his campaign for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from today. The actor-turned-politician is scheduled to visit several districts during the four-day long campaign.

Haasan will embark on his first phase of the campaign between December 13 and 16, and cover Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanniyakumari districts.

It should be noted that MNM's campaign tour was supposed to begin by the end of November but it was postponed owing to public health concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campaign comes days after Haasan's political party sent a delegation to New Delhi to support and participate in the Bharat Bandh earlier this week.

Ever since the formation of his party in 2018, Kamal Haasan has been a vociferous critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its policies, and it is unlikely he will join hands with it.

In the past, he had expressed desire to seek the support of Rajinikanth but is yet to make a statement on it ever since the Tamil superstar announced the formation of his party in January 2021.

The MNM contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections alone but failed to make an impact. Despite the drubbing in the general elections, Kamal Haasan recently claimed that his party has emerged as a third front in Tamil Nadu.

The ruling AIADMK has already confirmed that it will contest the 2021 Tamil Nadu elections in alliance with the BJP, while the DMK and Congress are also on track to fight the elections together.

The MNM may be among the smaller parties of Tamil Nadu but it can make a big impact in the state elections and have a chance to flip the tables.
