In the third and final phase of the 2020 Bihar Assembly Election, the Ramnagar constituency reserved for scheduled castes (SCs) will go to the polls on 7 November. Ever since 2000, the constituency has been a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP).
Ramnagar is situated in the West Champaran district of Bihar and comes under the Nagar Lok Sabha constituency of Valmiki. The other constituencies of the Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha assembly, Valmiki Nagar, Narkatiaganj, Bagaha and Lauria, will also cast their votes on November 7, apart from Ramnagar. The BJP emerged victorious in three of these five constituencies in the 2015 election.
Bhagirathi Devi of the BJP, Rajesh Ram of the Congress and Lokesh Ram of the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party are the top contenders for Ramnagar in 2020. This year's electorate strength is 2,95,612, involving 1,55,817 men, nearly 140,000 women, and nine from the third gender.
The constituency has a total population of 4,57,271, according to the 2011 census, of which 89.41 percent are rural and the remaining 10.59 percent belong to the urban portion.
In 2015, Bhaghirathi Devi of the BJP defeated congressional candidate Purnmasi Ram in Ramnagar by a margin of almost 18,000 votes. 82,166 votes and 48.05 percent of the vote were won by Bhaghirathi Devi. Out of a voting population of 2,61,358, voter turnout was 65.52 per cent.
Congress candidate Purnmasi Ram received 64,178 votes and a 37.53 percent share of the vote. Out of a voting population of 2,61,358, the voter turnout in 2015 was 65.52 per cent.
During the 2010 election, Congress faced a greater defeat as its candidate, Naresh Ram, lost 29,789 votes to Bhaghirathi Devi of the BJP.
This year, the BJP, which is also the new government in alliance with the Janata Dal (United States), is seeking a sixth consecutive win in Ramnagar. The chief ministerial face of the alliance is Nitish Kumar.
Voting has already been completed in 165 of the 243 total constituencies. On October 28, 71 constituencies went through the first phase of the polling, while on November 3, 94 saw the second phase of the polling. With 78 constituencies, the third and final step will be voted on on Saturday. On November 10, the counting of votes and the announcement of results will take place.
