A go-ahead for the farmers' tractor march on KMP (Kundli-Manesar-Palwal) Expressway Thursday was issued by the Haryana Police. Police predict that from 11 am to 4 pm as the march takes place, about 2,500 tractors will be on the expressway.
"In principle, we have decided to give farmers permission to march on the KMP Expressway on Thursday," Haryana DGP Manoj Yadava told The Indian Express on Wednesday.
On Wednesday evening, senior police officers held a briefing to finalise the modalities for approving the tractor-march, including its direction, scheduling and the number of tractors to join in the march.
Police officers said the march will affect movement of normal traffic on the expressway, especially from Kundli border to Tikri border for around four hours.
Farmers will also hold tractor marches on Thursday in other areas of Haryana to protest the three farm laws.
Yadava said, "We will try to ensure that the march takes place safely and without causing the people much inconvenience."
According to Sonipat SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa, the movement of heavy vehicles on the Ambala-Delhi highway (NH-44) towards Delhi will be redirected from Karnal and Panipat and the small vehicles from Ganaur, Murthal and Bhalgarh will be diverted from Sonipat. Randhwa also said they had made appropriate arrangements in the districts of Sonipat to prevent jams.
In Palwal, in addition to deploying Haryana Police personnel along with water cannons and other equipment to tackle any untoward event, officers from the central armed police forces will be mobilised to maintain law and order.
Farmers' leaders said Haryana villagers had received a big response to the demand for a tractor march. On Wednesday, farmers engaged in a rehearsal at several locations in Haryana. Also women came out to take the driving seat in tractors in Khadwali village in Rohtak District. Village Sarpanch Om Prakash Hooda said, "We expect the tractor march to involve about 1,000 tractor-trolleys from neighbouring villages."
Suresh Koth, the Hisar district farmer's head, said farmers from separate Haryana districts are going to Delhi on Thursday.
Today, in Narwana (Jind) and Karnal town, the farmers conducted a tractor march. Farmers from the village of Khedi Jalab invited me to join the march on Thursday.
For the next two weeks, senior farmer leaders will visit protest sites in villages and towns to mobilise more support for the ongoing agitation, according to Koth.
