If there is little to go through with recent estimates of daily new Covid-19 cases registered in the region, the third wave of Covid-19, the worst one ever, could well be heading for a downturn. Experts, however, assume that the number of fresh cases registered in the city would not drop significantly.

The city has witnessed a decreasing pattern since November 11, the day which saw the biggest single day spike of about 8,500. Buoyed by the help of experts, the city's chief minister and health minister believed that the high was over.

Delhi reported 4,006 cases on Tuesday, while 58,456 samples were collected, with the active case count remaining above the 30K-mark. The cases will again see a surge until the end of December, during the Christmas and New Year seasons. Maybe the high is over but the surge has not stopped. Winter still plays a major part, too. This wave was primarily due to grain burning emissions.

"We saw that the majority of cases were either those over the age of 70 or those with comorbid conditions, mostly those with respiratory problems. The hospitals are well prepared, however. We had anticipated the third wave and taken adequate measures. Therefore even if we see an increase in cases again, there will not be much problem in handling cases," said Dr. Ajeet Jain,  nodal officer of Covid-19 ward. 

Let's not say that this wave has stopped. Authorities ought to be cautious of how the end of the peak is communicated since it may alter people's attitudes and understanding of the pandemic and may exacerbate the situation again.

As the winter becomes more serious, we may again see a rise around Christmas and New Year's time,' said Dr Chandrakant Lahariya, epidemiologist and health specialist, who is also co-author of the forthcoming' Till We Win: India's battle against the pandemic of Covid-19.'
