NDA led BJP is all set to form a group of the minister to look into the matter of sexual harassment at workplace. The group will include Women minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. The group will be headed by Union Finance Minister Rajnath Singh.
The group will look into the Vishakha Guidelines which includes a set of procedural guidelines for use in India in cases of sexual harassment. They were promulgated by the Indian Supreme Court in 1997 and were superseded in 2013 by the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
The panel will report within three months and investigate if the current safeguards are sufficient and adequate for sexual harassment. It will also look whether the current guidelines are needed to strengthen and if not, the ministers will take steps to strengthen the existing laws so that the justice can be availed without bringing the matter into the court.
India’s Mee Too movement which started with Actor Tanushree Dutta accusing another actor Nana Patekar of harassing her on the film set of “Horn Ok Please” in 2008.
Several other filmmakers like Subhash Ghai, Sajid Khan, Rajat Kapoor and actor Alok Nath have also been accused of sexual misconduct.
Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar resigns from his post was also accused of harassing female journalists.
