Google is taking a significant step toward a future without passwords by expanding its passwordless login feature, Passkeys, to more devices. Originally available only on Android, Passkeys can now be used across platforms including Windows, MacOS, Linux, and soon iOS. The update allows users to seamlessly access accounts like Google, Amazon, WhatsApp, and PayPal by using biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, or device-specific PINs instead of traditional passwords.

Passkeys, launched last year, aim to offer a more secure and user-friendly alternative to passwords. By leveraging cryptography, Passkeys help protect sensitive data from hackers, phishing attacks, and other cybersecurity threats. Users can now store and sync their Passkeys across multiple devices using Google Password Manager, simplifying the login process across different platforms.

Prior to this update, non-Android users had to scan a QR code or manually save their credentials in Google Password Manager to access Passkeys. Now, the syncing feature allows users to access their saved Passkeys across any device they are logged into, eliminating the need to remember or reuse passwords.

To enhance security further, Google has introduced an additional layer of protection through the new Password Manager PIN feature. When using Passkeys on a new device, users can verify their identity either with this PIN or by unlocking their device’s screen.

Currently available in beta on ChromeOS, the expanded Passkey functionality is expected to roll out soon for iOS users. This move is part of Google's larger effort to drive users toward more secure, passwordless authentication methods and reduce the risks associated with traditional password use.
