In a disturbing turn of events, Gmail users are facing threats from a sophisticated AI-powered cyberattack. The hackers are reportedly using realistic AI-generated phone calls that impersonate Google Support to deceive users into providing sensitive information.

In a blog post, Sam Mitrovic shared his personal experience with the scam. He initially received a notification requesting approval for a Gmail account recovery attempt, a common phishing tactic aimed at obtaining user login credentials. After dismissing the alert, he later received another notification indicating a missed call from a number claiming to be Google Sydney.

A week later, the same notifications occurred, prompting Mitrovic to answer the call. The individual on the line, purporting to be from Google Support, informed him of suspicious activity on his Gmail account and claimed that the attacker had downloaded his account data.

What raised alarm bells for Mitrovic was the fact that the call originated from a number appearing to belong to a legitimate Google business page. Upon further inspection, he realized that the voice on the call was AI-generated, characterized by a nearly flawless delivery that repeatedly echoed “Hello” every ten seconds.

Experts warn that this scam is designed to capture user credentials and may utilize session cookie malware to circumvent two-factor authentication, should it be enabled. Users are urged to remain vigilant and skeptical of unsolicited calls claiming to be from tech support.
