At its annual virtual conference, Duocon, Duolingo unveiled two new features aimed at transforming the way users learn languages. The language learning giant, recognized as a CNET Editors' Choice Award winner, has launched Adventures and AI video calls as part of its continued push to innovate language education.

“Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available,” said Luis von Ahn, Duolingo's co-founder and CEO, in a press release. “These innovations are just the beginning of how we’re leveraging technology to better serve our global community of learners.”

Adventures: A New Interactive Learning Experience

The new Adventures feature introduces a gamified element to the Duolingo app, allowing users to explore unique settings and storylines within the Duolingo universe. Characters like Lily and Oscar guide learners through real-world scenarios, such as ordering at a café, where they can apply their language skills in practical situations.

For now, Adventures are limited to one per course unit and are available to English speakers learning French and Spanish speakers learning English. The feature is accessible on both iOS and Android devices.

AI Video Calls: Real-Time Conversations with Duolingo Characters

In a groundbreaking addition, Duolingo is integrating AI video calls, where users can practice their language skills in real-time conversations with the character Lily. These calls aim to simulate natural dialogue, providing learners with a personalized, low-pressure environment to improve their conversational abilities.

Currently, AI video calls are available to iOS subscribers of Duolingo Max, the premium service priced at $30 per month or $168 annually. The feature is initially offered for those learning English, Spanish, or French, with plans to expand to Portuguese, Italian, and German in the near future.

Duocon Highlights: Music Course and Electric Piano

In addition to the new language features, Duolingo announced a collaboration with Loog, a portable instrument manufacturer, to launch a three-octave electric piano. This piano is specifically designed for Duolingo’s Music course and is available for preorder at $250 from the Duolingo Store.

With these new features, Duolingo continues to expand its educational offerings, cementing its place as a leader in the tech-driven language learning space.
