AB de Villiers never cease to surprise. Albeit this time, it was met with disbelief and collective sadness. On Wednesday, the South African legend AB de Villiers (or ABD) decided to retire from all forms of cricket. He brings curtain down on one of most illustrious cricketing career. In his 14 year career, ABD has played 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20s. The numbers do no justice to show the sheer talent and brilliance, he exhibits on field. ABD holds the record for the fastest 50, 100 & 150 in the ODI history. He is the only batsman in ODI to have averaged 50-plus in seven consecutive calendar years. His versatility and the ability to hit all 360 degrees of the field, earned him the moniker ‘Mr. 360 degrees’. His commitment on the field, batting or fielding has always been exemplary. His athleticism while fielding is unparallel, second only to another South African legend Jonty Rhodes. In fact, ABD is a phenomenal sporting talent, he has excelled in every sport he has put his hands on. He was part of the junior national hockey team, soccer team, holds several junior swimming records, also captained junior national rugby team, and was a u-19 national badminton champion. Besides, he was also good at academics and received Nelson Mandela medal. But, his wears his achievements lightly, and remains the most humble human the sport has seen. He is a role model invokes respect and adulation in equal measure from his peers, juniors, and fans. He was associated with IPL as a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s formidable energy (his gravity defying catches are legendary), and was the most popular non-Indian cricketer. Every time he walks on to the field, stadium erupts into the chants of AB dee!!. In this time of farewell, he wants hand over the mantle to young, and does not hangs on till next World Cup (2019). Grace beyond personal record. His achievements are colossal and most remembered for his sportsman spirit, commitment, innovation and humbleness. This is a void very tough to fill.. There is no other ABD. Truly, a legend.
