Former Chief Minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav and his clan have been midst legal tussle for some time. The RJD supremo who stood tall in the early 1990s was also seen the crusader of the poor and the downtrodden. He enjoyed massive support from the Muslim community as well. He was at the peak of his political regime from 1990 to 1997. When Fodder Scam cast shadow on his political career, he installed his wife Rabri Devi as the Chief Minister.

 Of late, the Yadav clan has been named in numerous corruption cases. Lalu Yadav is in the jail for three cases of corruption against him. The family's rampant corruption and perceived infallibility has tarnished their alliance with the Nitish Kumar-led government, the Mahagatbandhan in 2017. The troubles for Yadavs is only put off till October 3.

Back in 2015, before the Legislative Election, JD(U), RJD and the Congress formed the Mahagathbandhan . It was a thorny relationship which saw the old rival, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav work up a compromise for the sake of the alliance. Nitish kumar had to yield to Yadav's demands to give Assembly tickets to both of his sons, Tej Pratap Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav. The elder son Tej Pratap was the Health Minister  whereas Tejashwi was the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, this was criticized by many as Tejashwi Yadav is 9th class fail.  Of the two brothers, Tejashwi is seen as the heir apparent for his orator ship qualities and mass appeal. The Grand Alliance could rule only for 20 months. When Tejashwi had to resign from the Deputy Chief Minister's post.

But as the corruption charges surfaced, Nitish Kumar step down from the Chief Minister ship and dissolved the Grand Alliance. Further, he rekindled his alliance with the BJP in July 2017. Since then, Yadav family has been through thick of legal tussle, with CBI had charge-sheeted 14 persons including Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, Tejshwi Yadav, former Union Minister Prem Chand Gupta, his wife Sarla Gupta in connection with alleged corruption in handing out contract for two IRCTC hotels to a private company. This was done in return for a prime land near Patna through a benami firm owned by Prem Chand Gupta and his wife. The land was then transferred to Rabri Devi's and Tejashwi Yadav's name. This 12 year-old case has come to Yadav clan's undoing. RJD is under crisis since. On August 31, the special court granted bail to the mother-son duo.  The recent development can be seen as a temporary reprieve.   

These truly are testing times for the RJD as they have to regroup themselves with the General Elections next year. Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal(United)  seat- sharing negotiations are in progress with BJP.  RJD must be finding itself left in the cold for the time being.
