Walmart-Flipkart Engagement Party!! India 1.2 billion population is getting comfortable with e-commerce, and how! With the surge of online transaction on the rise, India certainly tantalizes the international markets. Walmart is one such company. The US-based retail giant has set its eye on the Indian market and make inroads into India burgeoning e-commerce and economy. This is Walmart biggest acquisition yet. It has announced in May that it will pay 16 billion dollar for a roughly 77 percent stake in Flipkart, a move to take on the arch-rival Amazon.com Inc. According to the President and CEO Douglas McMillon, Flipkart is the perfect platform to launch in India. This ensures the entry into the fastest growing online retail market. Previously, Walmart had tried unsuccessfully to enter the country. Albeit, Wal-Mart has 21 wholesale stores across India, it needed the Flipkart local knowledge to find footing in India. The decision was not met with enthusiasm by the investors. CEO McMillon reasoned that the study of Flipkart in India and its success will help them understand the Indian market and the people aspirations and demands. Flipkart, a Bangalore-based has developed a strong management team. There is an ecosystem built within it, which works and supports other operations. Their garments, apparel online sites Myntra and Jabong are superbly successful and there is logistics arm of Flipkart, which operates in 800 cities. Walmart hopes that with the innovative streak of Flipkart and with Walmart long experience in the retail experience, supply chain expertise, and cash reserves, Flipkart can continue to excel in the local market knowledge and take on the war against Amazon in India. This will accelerate its growth to 200 billion dollar by 2028 as India middle-class customer base grows every year and smartphones penetration increases. This Walmart-Flipkart deal has raised concerns with small-scale trading bodies. A Mumbai trader body had voiced their concerns with The Confederation of All India Traders, it feels the Walmart will bring prices very low, making the market hyper-competitive which will cannibalize the market. That the small and medium-sized traders feeling the pinch is evident.
