Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani, brought in by the government to simplify the process of filing GST returns, made a long presentation at the meeting of the powerful Goods and Services Tax Council today. There has been no decision on the changes that will be made but Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the council had a clear sense of the direction that they will take. The all-powerful GST Council today revised rates on 29 items and 53 categories of services, and decided to make the process of filing GST returns simpler to ease compliance burden for small businesses. The new GST rates will be applicable from January 25. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who heads the panel, said the next meeting of the Council may consider bringing items like crude oil, natural gas, petrol, diesel, ATF and real estate within the GST purview.
